Creating a Culture for Learning
Communicating with Students
I believe every student deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and I seek to get to know each of my students on a personal level. In learning more about my students I am able to better understand what motivates them to learn and what might interest them in the classroom. I communicate with students through whole class discussions, one-on-one discussions, email, feedback on assignments, my classroom website, twitter, and more. I add and change my modes of communication to those that most benefit my students. I attend after school activities and take an interest in my students as young adults and enjoy seeing their personal, social, and academic growth in my classroom.

Communicating with Parents
I believe keeping open lines of communication with parents is vital to student success. I communicate with parents in whatever mode they are most comfortable. At the beginning of each year I ask parents how they would like me to communicate with them, whether it be by telephone, email, or sending notes home. I always look forward to parent teacher conferences as I truly enjoy meeting and talking with my students' guardians. I also keep a classroom website up to date to keep parents informed about what we are doing in the classroom. My website includes a description of what we do each day, assignments students can print at home, as well as, test dates, and information on long-term projects.

Collaborating with Staff
I have had the opportunity to work closely with other members of staff in several of the schools where I have worked. I have participated in Professional Learning Communities at the school and district level, participated in the School Improvement Committee at West Middle School, attended various Professional Development meetings, attended New Teacher Academy programs at the MISD, and sought out veteran teachers and new colleagues to share ideas. I believe collaboration with colleagues has helped me to become a better educator and plan to continue seeking out opportunities to learn and grow professionally.
